Something Different : Heathrow Pod? What is it?
So, why such a strange title, for a bus blog? Well as many of you know, we are looking to expand this year and thanks to our friend Jack, he has helped us get the source of this post!
Anywho, the Heathrow Pod is the worlds first personal Rapid Transit system unveiled May 2011, the transit system provides connects within Terminal 5. It is part of a scheme too make things easier for commuters to travel around Heathrow, and yet feel very cozy andcomfortable.
The pods doesn't run on tracks. The have barriers and a smart system to not collide into each other. They generally have a max speed of 40MPH
So, let me explain how the Heathrow Pod works. For example:
You got off the Piccadilly Line or a Local bus route at Terminal 5 Station/Bus Station. You would take the elevator upstairs and get off, like a normal person... You would then proceed infront of you where you will see a line up of 4 pods behind a protective screen. You would walk up to the screen where there are these personal electronical touch screens. The screens are there for you to enter your destination (touch screen). For example. You may select the destination "Car Park B". Once you enter, that the pod will be programmed to Car Park B, you are expected to get inside of the Pod and press a "Close Doors" button, the pod will close the doors and start to move. A voice (pre-recorded) will start to speak to you stating where you are heading and and the time it will take. On an overhead screen, facts about the pod will be showing. Once you are approach your destination. The pod will speak to you stating "You are near to your destination...Dont forget your personal belongings". And thats basically how it works. Below is a video of the pod. So, I hope you enjoy!
This post is the first post of a brand new section which has opened to the blog. Called "Something Different". This means that it will be a post about something which is not a London Bus. It can even include Observations in places out of London. So watch this space!
I would also like to take this time to say a special thank you to Jack. He has helped the blog find many new things to do this month. He has been great help and we would like to say thanks for everything. It was his idea to do the Heathrow Pods. As its something unique and different from everyone elses blogs. He came along with me too to do this. So I would like to say thanks to Jack for this. Without him. Most of the posts this month wouldnt be here!
