Notting Hill Carnival Disruptions

Every year, London's Notting Hill plays home to Europe's largest carnival, which is a great way of bringing communites togther from all ethnic backgrounds to celebrate and enjoy a big party in West London.

Due to this mass event, roads in the area closed, causing bus routes to be put on diversion or curtailed whilst people flock to Notting Hill for the Carnival.

Here's a list of some of the Bus routes which are on diversion:

Route 28:
During the Carnival, the route runs a normal serivce from Wandsworth until it is curtailed at Notting Hill Gate.

Route 36: During the Carnival, route 36 is on diversion via Harrow to complete it's journey to Queens Park.

Route 52:

During the carnival, route 52 operates in three sections which are as follows:

Section 1: Normal routing from Willesden Bus Garage to Kensal Rise and back.

Section 2: Normal routing from Victoria Station to Notting Hill Gate and back.

Section 3: Service between Willesden Bus Garage and Victoria Station on diversion via Harrow Road, Edgware Road and Park Lane before re-joining it's normal routing at Hyde Park Corner.

To help compensate for the disruptions, 4 express bus services have been introduced on top of the regular routes, which are as follows:

Route 2X - runs a normal service from Norwood Garage to Hyde Park Corner and runs non-stop to Notting Hill Gate. However, on the return journey, the route regains full service at Marble Arch.
The route uses a mix of 9.9m Alexander Dennis Enviro 400s (T) allocated to route 133 and a mix of  VLAs normally allocated to route 2.

Route 36X - runs a normal service from Peckham to Vauxhall, and then runs non-stop to Harrow Road "Prince of Wales Road" via Marble Arch, using spare PVLs which are normally allocated to route 36 from New Cross Garage (NX).

Route 436X - runs a normal service from Peckham to Hyde Park Corner and then runs non-stop to Notting Hill Gate. However, on the return journey, the route will regain full service at Marble Arch. The route uses Spare 12m Rigid Mercedes Benz Citaros from route 521 based at Waterloo Garage (RA).

Route 205X - runs between Aldgate and the Heart of the Carnival, via the normal 205 routing of the Marleybone Road using a mix of 10.2m Alexander Dennis E40Hs, which are allocated to Route 15 and 10.6m Scania Omnicites on the N230UD chassis which are allocated to route 205.

  1. It's a shame that there aren't more shadow "X" services run normally. I'd love to see some big routes like the 53 have a 53X service, which would go fast over certain sections.

  2. John,

Services like this would be much appreciated in London, but then again there are some people who would just like to have a regular service that stops at all stops. Thats why TFL have kept their Express routes to a minimal. Just to be in the safe zone.

    Thanks For Your Comment John!

  3. I would like to see a X159 that goes from Croydon to Paddington Basin stopping at West Croydon Bus Station, Thornton Heath Pond, Norbury Station, Streatham Station, Streatham Hill Station, Brixton Station, Kennington Church, Waterloo Station, West Minster, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus, Marble Arch, Edgware Road Station, Paddington Station and Paddington Basin. Operated by Arriva London at TH or BN.
